Our Story

Originally known as The Cricket Club Hotel, the Coppersmith Hotel takes its name in honour of Ebenezer Thomson (1854-1925) former South Melbourne Mayor and Coppersmith by trade.

The creation of the Coppersmith is the result of empathetic grafting of the new building with the historic mid 1800’s façade, which has enabled the regeneration of a well-known local South Melbourne landmark.

You should still be able to see and feel our 1800’s heritage with the simple palette and layering of materials. This desire to reflect the beauty of an earlier era extends to the interior where moments of interest have been created through the exploration of authentic materials. You might also notice the touches of copper throughout the hotel which are there to pay tribute to the past Coppersmiths who lived in South Melbourne.
